Snipe Junior National Championship 2009

The Snipe Junior National Championship was held on Montagu Bay this last Sunday, June 28. Only three boats competed as compared to six last year and these were Chris Sands with crew Donico Brown, BJ Burrows with cousin Richard Bowe, and Danny De Cardenas with Bruce Hall.
Winds were very light to non-existent, until the very end of the last race when a nice southerly breeze kicked in. – typical regatta weather. Nonetheless, these conditions were excellent practice for what is expected at the Junior Snipe World Championship to be held in San Diego at the end of August; an event for which the winners of these Nationals qualify to represent The Bahamas.

The Sands/Brown team, having a great deal more experience in the Snipe than the others, dominated; winning all three races by a fair margin. However, the best fun was had by the other two teams, as they battled it out. It came down to a photo finish in the last race with Burrows/Bowe crossing the line barely a foot ahead of De Cardenas/Hall to take second place overall. Before this race the two teams were tied for second.
The three teams had fun even though the conditions were extremely challenging.
Hopefully next year we will see more boats on the starting line.
Congratulations to Chris and Donico. We look forward to them doing well at the Snipe Junior World Championships. (by Robert Dunkley)
