The Junior Sailing Optimist Fall Regatta - 2011
Nov-29-11 07:12
[Text & Photos by Robert Dunkley} - The Optimist Fall Regatta for our junior sailors was hosted by the Royal Nassau Sailing Club this past weekend (November 26 & 27). Although the wind and waves on Saturday was just too much for the Optis (winds over 25 knots), Sunday proved to be a perfect sailing day for the Gold and Silver fleets. Five races were sailed by the Gold Fleet and four by the Silver. The breeze was from the northeast at 14 to 18 knots; great for the heavier kids racing upwind and perfect for lighter weights planning downwind. Racing for the Green Fleet (Beginners) was postponed to next weekend as the winds were too high for them.

| [by Robert Dunkley] - Bahamas Laser Jr. National Championship 2011 took place the weekend on November 19. All of the sailors enjoyed sailing in the brisk breeze, especially Gerrick Farquharson (#181135) who is seen here coming off the start line in good shape. With thanks to Palm Cay, a new residential development on the water in the south eastern part of new Providence, this sailor was competing with a new sail and proud to be carrying the Palm Cay logo. The BSA is extremely grateful to Palm Cay and other sponsors for all their support with junior sailing in The Bahamas. It is because of your generosity that our youngsters enjoy sailing today. |

The weekend of October 1-2 played host to the 2011 Bahamas Optimist National Championship, which for the first time was hosted in Grand Bahama.
Oct-13-11 14:07
[by GBSC] The event was organized by the local sailing authority Grand Bahama Sailing Club (GBSC) and by the National sailing authority the Bahamas Sailing Association (BSA). The event organizers were pleased to see that seventy six (76) sailors from all around the Bahamas traveled to Freeport for the chance at the National sailing title. Sailors came from Nassau, Long Island, Harbour Island, Governor's Harbour, Abaco and of course from all over Grand Bahama. The Nationals also hosted sailors from the Cayman Islands, the USA and even the UK.
The Optimist sailing dinghy is one of the most popular one-design sailboats for youth sailors in the world. With its one sprit-rigged mainsail and its small pram shaped hull, the "Opti" is ideal for both novice and experienced sailors. The class allows for children under the age of 16 to compete. It was a beautiful site seeing 76 of these boats lined up along Taino Beach.

Christopher Sands Takes 29th Place At The ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship In Zadar, Croatia
Jul-28-11 10:06
[by Robert Dunkley] ~ This year’s 41st. ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship held in Zadar, Croatia was an extremely challenging event for our top Bahamian junior sailor, Christopher Sands who in major Laser Radial championships in North American earlier in the year did extremely well, placing seventh in both the Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta (Miami) and the Laser Midwinters East Championship (Clearwater) out of 140 and 110 boats respectively. At the ISAF Youth Worlds he raced in the Boy’s Laser Radial class in which he was 29th out of 50. Christopher and his coach Robert Dunkley were hoping for a better result, especially as Christopher last year took 28th place out of 53 and he had substantially improved his boat speed, boat handling and tactics over the last year. As Dunkley says “When considering the level of competition in both of these years Christopher has done exceptionally well. To put things into perspective, this championship is the premier event for youth sailing in the world. It is modeled after the Olympic Games and is designed as the introductory event for this level of sailing. Only one sailor/team from each country (58 nations participated this year) qualifies each year to represent their nation in the eight different classes hosted at this championship. Many of the sailors who have participated here have gone on to the Olympic Games. For youth sailing it is the ultimate.” Over 350 sailors participated at this event in eight different classes and with full compliment of team leaders and coaches (many professionally paid) plus race officials there were over 550 people involved.

Nassau Sailors dominate at Sunfish and Optimist Regatta in Marsh Harbour
May-12-11 14:29
[by Lori Lowe] ~ The 21st Homer Lowe Memorial Sunfish Regatta was held over Mother’s day weekend hosted by the Marsh Harbour Sailing Club. The Regatta was held in conjunction with the Hugh Cottis Memorial Optimist Regatta. The Optimist Dinghy is the top youth boat sailed by sailors up to the age of 16 in more than 100 countries throughout the world. The Sunfish is a boat well-known throughout the Bahamas and a natural progression for youth too old or big for the Optimist. Thanks to the attendance of the Grand Bahama Sailing Club who attended the Lowe Cottis event for the first time bringing some 21 junior sailors from Freeport and West End the Optimist Regatta eclipsed a somewhat sparsely attended Sunfish Regatta by a factor of three. Sailors attended the Event from Nassau, Freeport and West End and locally from Marsh Harbour, Hope Town and Cherokee with some as young as 8 years old. It was great to see all those youth sailors, both girls and boys, sailing in and out among the sailboats moored in Marsh Harbour. The beautiful weather added to the ambience of what has become the “fun” Optimist Sunfish Event of the year providing light and very manageable winds for most of the regatta. This proved to be fabulous conditions for all the young sailors providing a great introduction to racing especially for those just embarking on what is hoped will be a lifelong passion, if not in competitive sailing then just in being out on the water. The usual 30 degree shifts that Marsh Harbour is known for were also much in evidence providing some frustration but also ensuring that most competitors remained close to the money in every race even sometimes until the last tack thus making for some exciting racing and nail-biting finishes.(more...)
Dinghy Race Series @ Hope Town Sailing Club
Mar-09-11 07:03
(by Matthew McCoy | Photo Credit: Cyndy Merrill)
The Hope Town Sailing Club held a dinghy race this Monday. It was scheduled for Sunday but moved due to a local funeral. The change of date resulted in quite a few competitive locals (Jeff, Jim and Dwayne) from not competing. Usually it would just be postponed a week but there is already a series scheduled for the following Sunday. At any rate it was a beautiful day and the Abaco Dinghies were able to race for the first time this year. It was the Rheingold Trophy, with the official trophy being presented to the top Abaco Dinghy.

Chris Sands and Paul de Souza at the Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta
Dec-31-10 19:26
Dec-31, 2010: Wrap-up article by Chris Sands
December 26th to the 30th Paul de Souza and myself (Christopher Sands) were in Miami, Florida representing the Bahamas at the 2010 Orange Bowl Youth Regatta. I was also accompanied by coach Robert Dunkley.
Paul sailed in the Optimist Green Fleet and sailed extremely well! If the breeze would have stayed up like it was in the first day he would have easily taken a first or second overall. But as the wind lightened up on the second day Paul was battling it out with some of the other lighter American sailors and still continued to do well. Paul was able to end the regatta with very consistent results and place a great fourth overall!
I sailed in the Laser Radial Fleet amongst 140 other sailors. The competition was tight with people coming from all over, and there being a few world champions in the fleet! The first day I enjoyed the breeze and was able to finish 8th and 3rd which I was pleased with. Then the wind began to die and I was trying to keep my mistakes to a minimum. In the 3rd race my start wasn’t the best and I couldn’t get my boat moving and I finished a rough 27th.
The next two races were still very light but I was able to finish 12th and 6th. Overall I finished 7th out of 140 boats!
In the end it was a great regatta, even with the lack of wind. Both Paul and I have been able to gain so much from this one international regatta. The amount of learning done in just one international regatta is equal to ten local regattas! Lastly, I would really like to thank the Nassau Yacht Club and coach Robert Dunkley!

2010 Bahamas Junior Sunfish Nationals
Aug-16-10 22:04
Aug-16, 2010 (by Lori Lowe)
Chris Sands the 2009 Junior National Champion in the Sunfish Class repeated as National Champion in the Regatta held this past weekend in Montagu Bay showing his dominance in all weather conditions.
Last year's National Championships were held in heavy air while for this year's Championship the heaviest breeze seen was a gentle 7 knots. Due to often non-existent breezes and occasional heavy rain squalls Race Committee were only able to get off three races and these were all in held in winds of 5 knots or less. Although these are some of the most trying conditions that sailor's experience the improved caliber of the competitors over the past year was evident in the close racing throughout the fleet.

Two days of racing had to be cancelled, the first left all competitors on land due to sustained winds of 30 knots.
