The Junior Sailing Optimist Fall Regatta - 2011

[Text & Photos by Robert Dunkley} - The Optimist Fall Regatta for our junior sailors was hosted by the Royal Nassau Sailing Club this past weekend (November 26 & 27). Although the wind and waves on Saturday was just too much for the Optis (winds over 25 knots), Sunday proved to be a perfect sailing day for the Gold and Silver fleets. Five races were sailed by the Gold Fleet and four by the Silver. The breeze was from the northeast at 14 to 18 knots; great for the heavier kids racing upwind and perfect for lighter weights planning downwind. Racing for the Green Fleet (Beginners) was postponed to next weekend as the winds were too high for them.

| [by Robert Dunkley] - Bahamas Laser Jr. National Championship 2011 took place the weekend on November 19. All of the sailors enjoyed sailing in the brisk breeze, especially Gerrick Farquharson (#181135) who is seen here coming off the start line in good shape. With thanks to Palm Cay, a new residential development on the water in the south eastern part of new Providence, this sailor was competing with a new sail and proud to be carrying the Palm Cay logo. The BSA is extremely grateful to Palm Cay and other sponsors for all their support with junior sailing in The Bahamas. It is because of your generosity that our youngsters enjoy sailing today. |

[by GBSC] The event was organized by the local sailing authority Grand Bahama Sailing Club (GBSC) and by the National sailing authority the Bahamas Sailing Association (BSA). The event organizers were pleased to see that seventy six (76) sailors from all around the Bahamas traveled to Freeport for the chance at the National sailing title. Sailors came from Nassau, Long Island, Harbour Island, Governor's Harbour, Abaco and of course from all over Grand Bahama. The Nationals also hosted sailors from the Cayman Islands, the USA and even the UK.
The Optimist sailing dinghy is one of the most popular one-design sailboats for youth sailors in the world. With its one sprit-rigged mainsail and its small pram shaped hull, the "Opti" is ideal for both novice and experienced sailors. The class allows for children under the age of 16 to compete. It was a beautiful site seeing 76 of these boats lined up along Taino Beach.
