St. Petersburg Yacht Club Valentine Day regatta - Optimist

(Report Franny de Cardenas, BSA Opti fleet rep.) - This regatta is designed specifically for the Optimists, and set up a little differently than most regattas. Instead of a racing fleet and a green fleet, they have a Gold and Silver, and both fleets are competitive and sail for points and trophies. Both fleets have the Red, Blue and White age groups and they also have a girls group. On arrival at the Club, we met with our coach, Spencer Wiberly and the Race Committee Chairman to decide what fleet we would sail in. We had signed up for the Gold Fleet, but after getting an updated weather forecast, it was agreed to sail in the Silver Fleet. We were able to get one race in on Saturday. Chris and Dylan were in the top three the whole race and unfortunately Dylan capsized, but Chris did get the bullet!

On Sunday, the races were cancelled again, but we decided to take advantage of our coach, Spencer Wiberly, who took them all out for two hours. On their return, (after ONLY two hours), they were all blue and walking around like they had icicles in their pants! The Gold Fleet was out their for six hours, I’m not sure what condition our warm blooded; sun loving island kids would have come back in!
