RBC - Optimist National Championship 2005
(By Francisco de Cardenas)

1st Bahamas National Optimist Championship.

Montague Bay was the scene of the 1st ever Bahamas National Optimist Championships this past weekend (Sept. 24th/25th). We saw over 40 sailors competing in 2 fleets this past weekend - Racing Fleet (Championship) and the Green Fleet (Beginners).

We had children participating from schools throughout New Providence - D.W. Davis, St. Andrews, C.H. Reeves, Tambearly School, H.O. Nash and Queen's College.

The event was hosted by the Bahamas Sailing Association (BSA), The Nassau Yacht Club (NYC) and the Royal Nassau Sailing Club (RNSC). The Organizers had been planning this regatta for over 3 months, and it took a tremendous effort to put together the Race Committee and all of the support boats that it takes to run a safe regatta.

The Championship Fleet sailed a total of 11 races (6 on Saturday and 5 on Sunday) and were able to drop 2 races. The Championship Fleet (WBR) is split into 3 different age categories - White (10 and under), Blue (11 & 12), Red (13 - 15). The Green Fleet sailed all together as one group, and they sailed a total of 9 races. All of the sailors competing in this regatta, were of between the ages of 7 and 15.

It was a very competitive regatta, and it was not until the last race or two that we finally saw an over champion - Christopher Sands (results below).

Congratulations Chris!!
