| 2004 Fall Harvest Regatta in Miami Our thanks and congratulations are in order for
the ten young sailors from the Royal Nassau Sailing Club and Nassau Yacht Club who took
part in the 2004 Fall Harvest regatta hosted by the Miami Yacht Club over the weekend of
23 and 24 October 2004. In representing the Bahamas and their respective clubs they helped
turn a Floridian regatta into a truly international event.
In almost ideal conditions over the two
days the ten young sailors, some of whom were sailing in their first regatta, showed good
sportsmanship, abided by the rules governing sailing, made new friends and enjoyed
themselves both on and off the water. The young sailors, aged between 7 and 13 years,
competed in a 'green' fleet of 66 Opti sailors that included sailors from seven yacht
clubs around Florida to achieve at the highest level. As the fleet was large and it being
the first regatta for many sailors, a decision was made to divide the fleet into A and B
groups. This proved welcoming for the young Bahamian sailors who finished first in both
divisions. Special thanks go to Fanny de Cardenas as the "spark plug" behind the
Bahamian team, Tom Coleman of McLaughlin Optimists for supplying the ten boats in which to
sail, Billy Holowesko for transporting the sails and spars to Miami and Fay Regan, known
to many longer serving members of the club for her ongoing and continued support.
Congratulations go to Ben Myers, first in
the A group, Oliver Westwood 5th in A group, Eric Mabon of NYC who came 15th in A group,
as well as Dylan Christie for coming first in the B group, Michael Holowesko for coming
second in the B group, Toby Mc Carroll in 6th place, Dylan Lightbourn in 8 th place,
Bianca Illing in 9th place, Bruce Hall in 13 th place and Danny de Cardenas who came in
15th place. Well done and congratulations to all our young sailors. You have done
yourselves proud! (by Peter Westwood)

"I thought it was really fun and I enjoyed sailing against the US sailors
and I thought I got really great practice in the time we were up there. i
hope that I get to join again for the Orange Bowl Regatta. I started off as a
sunfish sailor then tried Optis. II think that this will be a good experience for me
and improve my sailing." |
